Amr was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt. He describes his upbringing as ‘quite normal’, saying he was a ‘calm kid’. Educationally, Amr was a high-flyer and seemed destined for University. He duly completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy and Biotechnology at the German University in Cairo, but it wasn’t academic tests that really challenged a young Amr Maher.
Fighting back from a debilitating three-year illness that effectively left him bed-bound, Amr refused to let life get the better of him. Battling against physical and mental demons, Amr found the inner strength to get his life back on track. His story was far from over, and, rather than conquering ‘The Falcon’, ill health and depression only served to forge a tough and steely determination in young Amr.
In 2009, Amr travelled to Germany to continue studying towards his degree. Still physically weak and battling low spirits, Amr met a man who noticed and admired Amr’s resolve. Agreeing to train Amr as a kickboxer at the Dusseldorf Kampf Club for a six month stint, ‘The Falcon’ agreed to conclude his training with a kickboxing bout against an opponent from another local gym. Amr would win by third round KO – but it was hardly the finish young fighters dream of! ‘It was an awkward KO,’ Amr recalls. ‘Back then I was all heart and no technique.’
Amr would return to Cairo that same year, and followed up his stint in Germany by visiting the Fairtex Training Centre, where he discovered Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. ‘I rolled for the first time and was mesmerized by how smaller athletes could dominate much larger opponents.’ Shortly after that, Amr would watch his first UFC event, and from that moment, knew MMA was his new calling in life.
After a perfect 10-0 start to his kickboxing career, Amr aced a local MMA tournament in Egypt. With ever-growing levels of confidence, the undefeated ‘Falcon’ set his sights on competing internationally. A perfectionist bent on continuous improvement, Amr’s dream of fighting at the highest levels would take him as far as India and Thailand, the latter becoming his second home.
